Pointing to EXTERNAL volumes/drives
Let me start by saying it's likely that I don't understand 25% of my own question...   I'm VERY new to this, but we are implementing SharePoint Services 3.0 at our company and my superficial touches of the site configurations, forms and other things has raised questions which I can not readily find applicable answers for in the MS Knowledgebase.

That might just be me.

==========================

We presently have a file server accessed by our employees both directly (through Explorer) and indirectly (through CFML pages on our Intranet.  Folder permission range from ALL user/group specificity (and the webserver exists as a user, with it's own permissioons).

One of the objectives is to migrate our document access to Sharepoint Services. While it is quite straightforward how SPS works with documents stored on the SPS Server machine, I do not see how I can point the SPS Site to documents on different volumes.

Can this be done?

Due to the changing nature of all these files, but creating a copy of the whole kit-n-kabodle on anything other than Go-Live day, would be a version control disaster.  Doing it at all would be a diskspace sin, anyway.

Utilizing WSS, there isn’t a simple way for SharePoint to serve as an intermediary between the portal and the backend file system.  There is really only one option and that is utilizing a custom web part written for this purpose.

If you have the luxury of utilizing MOSS, there are a couple of options that may get you close depending on your situation:
